Used Fadal CNC Mill
Fadal is a manufacturer of CNC mills that prides itself on being for machinists, by machinists. The company debuted its first CNC machine in 1980 and was a leader in the production of Vertical Machining Centers before closing its doors in 2008. In 2014, partnering with Merrill Technologies Group, it came back and launched the newest versions of the classic series, the VMC2516, VMC3016, VMC4020, VMC6030, and VMC8030. Today, used Fadal CNC mill machines are available both as vertical machining centers and horizontal CNC lathes.
Fadal Mills - Used CNC Mills
Since 1980 Fadal has been one of the top CNC mill manufacturers internationally. Fadal led the machining industry primarily with its high torque, 10,000 rpm, CNC vertical machining centers. Today Fadal is partnered with Merrill Technologies since its closure in 2008. Fadal is still one of the major machines used through the US and can still be found for sale.
What Controllers Come on a Used Fadal CNC mill?
Process controllers on used Fadal machines include the 1400-X, CNC88, CNC88HS, CNC32MP, CNCMP, and CNC Multi-Processor. The older, original VMC45 and VMC40 Fadal CNC milling machines have processor 1400-1, based on the Intel 8080. Fadal added increasing dash numbers to the 1400 to newer machines.
The CNC88 was based on Intel 8088 processors, and in later versions, the MP referred to Multiple Processors since it better described the architecture of many CPUs working at the same time. The MP controllers improved the speed of the loop position of each axis down to 1-millisecond intervals.
Note: You can replace old controllers on used Fadal machines with new controllers.
How to Interpret Model Numbers on Fadal Machines
The first two digits refer to the X-axis number of inches travel, and the next two digits refer to the Y-axis number of inches travel. (Note: There are numerous models of used Fadal CNC mills, so this is not a comprehensive list.)

Options on Fadal CNC Milling Machines
- Chip Conveyor: A variable speed chip conveyor with direct-drive that moves chips to a standard 55-gallon drum.
- Chip Wash-Down and Auger: The system washes chips to the front of the machine, and the chip auger moves the chips out of the CNC.
- Dual Arm ATC: On standard series VMCS with a Y-axis travel of 20 or greater, the dual arm improves the tool change performance.
- In-Process Measurement Probing: Touch probes which allow for measuring the time it takes to set up and run parts.
